Science is Vital welcomes the recent report from the Science and Technology Committee that highlighted the continuing problem of maintaining women in academic STEM careers and which urged universities to do more to retain them.

In particular, the report noted that the pervasive culture of short-term contracts was “hugely off-putting” to women. This observation aligns well with Science is Vital’s careers report that we presented to Mr Willetts back in 2011, showing that the career structure posed a considerable problem for researchers of both genders, but was particularly destructive for women scientists and engineers who wanted to have children. Thanks again to all our supporters who gave their feedback for this report.
